A personal and professional goal of mine has been to find ways to give back to my community. Fortunately, living in a small Maine town offers many avenues for service on a local and even global level.
I’ve worked with some fine area organizations since moving to Maine in the 80’s, among them the Camden First Aid Association, Camden Shakespeare Company, Youth Arts, Camden-Rockport-Lincolnville Chamber of Commerce, and the Penobscot Bay YMCA. Currently, I’m staying busy as an officer of my church and a member of the Pen Bay Hospital Community Relations Committee, as well as a director of Midcoast Habitat for Humanity.
As you know from earlier posts in which I described my first Habitat trip to Tutwiler, Mississippi, and my second Habitat week in Mobile, Alabama, this is an organization that really speaks to me. When I returned from Alabama, I vowed to look into my local affiliate, and see how I could help. Next thing I knew I was on the board as the Public Relations Director.
I’m six or seven months into my new role, and enjoying it immensely. Midcoast Habitat builds one split level ranch (see the photo above) per year for a family from Knox County, and the board does everything from selecting the recipient to pounding the nails. Along the way we have to raise funds to purchase land and supplies, keep the public informed of our efforts, and plan for changing economic times here in the Midcoast.
I’m about to update our website, but if you’d like to learn more about our efforts, check out Midcoast Habitat for Humanity.
